What happens in an occ session?
If you’ve ever thought about booking a session with the Oral Communication Center (OCC) but weren’t sure what to expect, you’re not alone! A lot of students assume they need to be “bad” at presenting to come in, or that sessions are formal or intimidating. In reality, OCC sessions are flexible, supportive, and created to meet you exactly where you are in your process!
What actually happens in a session?
First, you’ll meet with a trained consultant in a one-on-one setting. Sessions are collaborative, not evaluative—meaning you’re not being graded or judged. Instead, the consultant works with you to understand your goals and what you want help with.
This could include:
brainstorming ideas or organising your content
refining your structure or argument
improving slide designs
practising delivery and timing
working on confidence, clarity, or body language
Whether you’re starting from scratch or preparing for a final presentation, the session is tailored to your needs.
What makes OCC sessions different?
OCC sessions are not like typical tutoring. Instead of just telling you exactly what to fix, consultants help you think through your presentation and develop your own approach. It’s an interactive process where you actively practice, reflect, and improve.
The goal here isn’t perfection, it’s to make progress!
Do you need to come prepared?
Not at all! You can come with:
a full draft
a rough outline
or even just an idea
Consultants will adapt to wherever you are in the process.
Why should you try it?
Students who visit the OCC often find that even one session can make a big difference. You’ll leave with:
clearer ideas
more confidence
practical strategies you can use immediately
And since sessions are free, there’s really no downside to trying it out.
