Isabella Pulia

Senior, communication major, first semester as an OCC Peer Consultant.

Isabella Pulia is one of the friendly and knowledgeable consultants at the OCC who is here and ready to help!

Hi, my name is Bella, and I am currently a senior studying communication! In my free time, I enjoy going to the gym, reading, and spending time with my family and friends.”

Why did you choose to become a part of the OCC?

I chose to be a part of the OCC because public speaking has always been something I dreaded doing. Over my time at Maryland, it has gotten better, and I wanted to give back to our UMD community and help others get over their public speaking fears.”

What is your favorite movie?

I love ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’; I rewatch them multiple times a year.”

What would you say is your worst habit when presenting/speaking publicly?

My worst habit while public speaking is losing my train of thought.”

How do you think an OCC session is more beneficial to a client than practicing on their own?

At the OCC, we offer clients the opportunity to practice in front of people and receive live feedback that wouldn’t be available when practicing alone in their room.”

How can a client apply what they learned in an OCC session to future situations?

Being open to receiving feedback is something that will benefit anyone in future situations.

What is the tip that you give to almost every client?

My advice to clients is to keep practicing; the more you speak publicly, the easier it will be. The more you make yourself uncomfortable, the more comfortable you will feel.”

Watch this video from Communication Coach Alexander Lyon to hear more about the importance of practice, and to learn about the 3x3+1 method for practicing your speech.

What advice do you have for a client who feels like they aren’t prepared for the meeting?

Coming prepared isn’t a necessity; it is our job to help you feel more prepared.”

OCC consultants are trained to help you with your speech or presentation no matter what stage you are in!

What would you do to help a client whose presentation is unfinished?

I would help the client organize their thoughts and ideas so we can create a set of goals to prioritize.”

What would you say to a client who says that they’re embarrassed to practice their presentation or speech with you?

Doing something afraid is better than not doing it at all.”

This is a great tip which is proven to help people overcome paralysis and builds confidence. The OCC is a safe space where consultants are prepared to listen without judgement.

Isabella highlights that organization and practice are key to a successful presentation. She urges students to do it even when they’re scared because that’s how you improve! At the OCC, you will always be greeted with a warm welcome and be met with encouragement from peer consultants who are rooting for you.
